Identifying the correct site is key. Exposed, smooth land clear of trees and buildings is ideal, within easy distance of the farm or electricity connection to minimise cabling and connection costs. Just a slight fluctuation in the average wind speed in a particular area can mean a big difference in the amount of energy produced. Even within sites, wind speed can vary greatly, so good assessment is critical.
Very little of the actual ground is taken up by the turbines and maintenance roads, and the turbine blades have to rotate at height to harness the wind effectively, therefore, land can still be used for farming activities alongside green power production.
